For the last ten weeks, we’ve considered the gifts and traits of ten women from the Bible. We’ve considered how God used these women to advance his kingdom and how he can use us. Today we meet Phoebe, a remarkable servant leader whose story, though brief in Scripture, speaks volumes about ministry and God’s work through everyday faithfulness.
A Woman of Influence and Service
In Romans 16:1-2, Paul writes:
“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.”
Paul’s words honor Phoebe with three significant titles:
Sister — a beloved member of the family of God
Servant (or Deacon) — a recognized leader who serves the church
Benefactor — a generous supporter who uses her resources to bless others, including Paul himself
What Did Phoebe’s Ministry Look Like?
While the Bible doesn’t tell us all the details about Phoebe’s life, her role is clear: she was a trusted servant leader in her church at Cenchreae (a port city near Corinth), and Paul entrusted her with the important task of delivering his letter to the believers in Rome.
This was no small responsibility! Carrying a letter meant not just physically transporting it, but also likely reading and explaining Paul’s message to the Roman church. Phoebe was a messenger, a minister, and a model of faithfulness.
Ministry in Action
The word Paul uses for Phoebe’s role is diakonos—translated “servant” or “deacon.” This broad term reflects the many ways ministry can be expressed: serving, leading, supporting, encouraging, and sometimes even funding the work of the church.
Phoebe is described as a benefactor, which suggests she may have used her financial resources to support the early church’s mission and hospitality. In a time when women’s roles were often restricted, Phoebe’s leadership and generosity made a lasting impact.
Why Phoebe’s Story Matters to Us
Though we don’t know her age, marital status, or profession, Phoebe’s example reminds us that God works through faithful people—no matter how little we may know about their personal details. Her faithfulness in ministry helped Paul, the early church, and the spread of the gospel.
Phoebe shows us that ministry isn’t about status or spotlight—it’s about serving God’s people with love, dedication, and generosity.
Reflect and Respond
As we consider Phoebe’s gift of ministry, let’s ask ourselves:
Who in your life demonstrates the gift of ministry? How have they encouraged your faith?
Where are you currently called to serve—in your church, home, workplace, or community? How might God use your ministry gift to advance His kingdom?
What challenges or fears keep you from stepping fully into ministry?
What’s one simple way you can serve someone this week as an expression of God’s love?
A Call to Faithful Service
Whether your ministry looks like teaching, hospitality, encouragement, prayer, or financial support, God uses every faithful act to reveal His will and grow His kingdom.
Like Phoebe, may we serve with humility and boldness, knowing that even small acts of faithfulness have eternal impact.
